Soda Kiln Tequesta, FL
Cross Draft Soda Kiln built for the Lighthouse Art Center in Tequesta, Florida. In 2004 I began rebuilding the clay program at the local art center. There were a few wheels, a kiln in disrepair, and a few students. Over 13 years I rebuilt the program in every aspect, and now there is a vibrant clay community at the Lighthouse Art Center. It was an honor to rebuild the soda kiln, and help the students further their artwork. We used Super Duty High Alumina Hard Brick for hot face, k23 Softbrick for cold face, 6# fiber, and vermiculite stucco for insulation. Framed using 3/16” mild steel, and powered by 2, 300k BTU/hr at 7” WC Propane, this kiln fires evenly to cone 10 in 12-14 hours.
